Full Version: Fitting Headunit To Yaris: Phase 2! (phase 1 Too)
Toyota Owners Club - Toyota Forum > Toyota Workshop > Workshop Submissions
Moffmo
The tutorials in the workshop only work on phase 1, but on the phase 2 the layout of the dash is very different, for example the top half of the dash is actually attached to the speedometer bay...

So what you need to do is firstly is pull off the Speedometer by gripping sides and pull, quite tricky, but dont worry it will come out eventually...

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_148_1114634225.jpg[/img]

This is why its different in phase two, in phase one you can ignore the steps involving taking the speedomter out.

After doing this, again for phase 2 only, you have you unscrew the screw holding dash to the dash lol...as shown here by the arrow and circle :)

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_148_1114634277.jpg[/img]

After this you need to take heater knobs off and unscrew the screws as shown in the pic. When you have done that, place your hands where the red lines are along dash (picture went a bit off, but you can figure it out), grab the edges and pull, and i mean really yank it! (dont be scared!)

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_148_1114634208.jpg[/img]

You should end up in this situation

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114177361/gallery_9368_148_1114634099.jpg[/img]

Try and put this put this out of the way without breaking the wiring, i just shoved it in speedo dash hole and it stuck it in there, its holds it pretty well ;)

Anyway, now you need to unscrew bottom half, you need to unscrew the screws shown by the arrows here....(Screws cannot been seen in pic, arrows show where it would be)

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_148_1114634172.jpg[/img]

Now remove the ashtray (press down on metal tab and pull it out) then unscrew the screws there as shown here...

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_148_1114634157.jpg[/img]

Now again grab the sides and pull, i found it easier to pull at the very bottom where dash board is and lever it out as far as possible. then i gripped the top and placed my thumbs on the sides of top bit, i levered with my thumb (pushed with my thumb) and it came out with a bit of a fight...but at least you dont hit yourself :D

Disconnect ALL the wiring that goes into the headunit and lighter. Congratulations you have a free unit...

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_148_1114634138.jpg[/img]

To put new headunit in, you need to unscrew the cash tray and put your headunit in from BEHIND where cash tray was, screw the headunit on like the cash tray was held. hey presto, you got a heavier lower dash :D

Start putting the bottom bit in, but leave it reasting agaist gear shifter...This will allow you to wire it all, get your halfords adaptor and plug the old toyota connections into it, then connect the adaptor the the headunit wiring, and if need, plug the headunit wiring into the headunit :D

S - Standard plug/wiring
HA - Halfords adaptor
HC - Headunit Connection :D

After that, get it all put away screw it all in and this should be a finished project :D

[img]http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/uploads/1114634138/gallery_9368_11_1114636807.jpg[/img]

Hope this helps you all!

Tips

Dont leave key in ignition this will blow your fuse :S (when disconnecting and connecting)

test the headunit works before putting everything back ;)

If you find the headunits memory resets itself, you need to look for a yellow wire and a red wire, there will be two halfs, you need to make sure the red wire is connected to the red wire and the yello wire is connected to the yellow wire.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Matt, your my hero!

Thanks a million -- u have no idea how i was struggling 'til I found your posting!
The descriptions are brill, and the photos invaluable! Cheers!

I've had to take the dash off 2 or 3 times now to fit my sat-nav - must say I've worked on many easier cars before :S

Thanks again,
Don
Moffmo
:D no problem mate, i too faced the same problem!

I too have taken the dash off to install sat nav
maz-uk
Thanks alot mate. I have managed to install a double din system with ur help and i think jezz. Made it very easy. Actually i got one query also. After finishing the install when i switched on my car the battery light and the airbag light is on now. Any ideas? :help:
Moffmo
not sure, maybe the DD unit is taking up too much battery?

As a side note (unlikely) just check your fuses
maz-uk
Umm i did check the fuses. All ok. DD consuming Power? never knew that could be a possibility its just a normal Alpine DD, but actually it is 50x4watts so could be possible. Will send a pic as soon as i get my phone connected to comp. Looks Very nice. Oh yeah and thanks to Jaxx not jezz

Cheers for the great instructions Matt. Fitted my new CD player last week. Wouldn't have been able to do it without your post.

I did want to cry at some point when a) I thought I'd bitten off more than I could chew and b) when I finally got to fit the unit in the slot and it didn't seem to fit (the unit's fascia had an little extra plastic surround that needed to be removed).

Cheers anyway, saved me a few quid on installation.

Mick

Sorry i cant post any pix. Unable 2. But it sure looks/sounds nice. Thanks again.
Moffmo
nice one guys! It does take alot of confident i agree, but the end result is soo pleasing..
Also, next time you need to take your dash off, you know how ;)

Mick - I had that, the dash would just not go back on, and i thought :censor: iv really buggered it up now. The clock thing was catching on a bit of wire and the plastic cones which guide it into the holes were bent...

Doh
Crisis
Does this start the Phase 1 part at taking the two dials off?

Also what parts do I need to buy? It seems I need to buy these 3 parts to do it properly, or do I? Let me know!

Fascia Surround:T55406-52010-B0
£38
Double Din Unit: FP-11-03 (Rav 4)
£40
ISO Lead: PC2-17-4 (Toyota)
£12

Cause thats £90 of extras! Is that right?
Ryan1985
Yeah Crisis, need all they bits thats why I haven't done it yet!!!
Crisis
Ouch, I guess its best to do it right though... Maybe Xmas would be a good time people always want to buy little things so maybe an ISO Lead hehe.
Moffmo
Crisis, make sure you get the fascia surround for whatever phase yaris you get ;)
Crisis
Well yes... Im not that stupid (although... Im sure I'l end up doing something similar)

HI, Moffman,

Is it possible for you to take a snapshot of how you've held the aftermarket HU in place? Plse...
My Br's bought a yaris and it has the cash box missing, ive tried to put the HU in and there is nowhere to screw it in :-(
Do i need brackets on the cage on the HU?
Plus do i need to take the plastic surround on my stereo off?
Many Thanks
FH
Moffmo
Hi, i wont be able to take any pics until friday, but you should be able to screw it in somehow.

The standard cd player is held on with a metal bracket at the sides, which is extended up to where the cashbox would go, i simply screwed into the side of the headunit.

And yes you will need to take the plastic surround off the stereo

P.S. if anyone else take pictures before friday please do, ta

Does anybody know if it works the same way in a t-sport. -the speedomeeter is different, just wondering.

Great guide! :-)

But where do you buy the "Halford adaptor"?

I guess that the local Toyota-dealer don’t sell then... ;-)

Tricky one.. Halfrauds is a shop in england. Do you have any big ALL-AREAS motor shops? or even shops that specialize in ICE (In car Entertainment? )
gazza1286
If it's the Wiring adaptor that you need. They are available on ebay:

Search "toyota wiring" gives:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Toyota-ISO-Wiring-Lo...1QQcmdZViewItem
Martin Terp
No ALL-AREAS motor shops i Denmark... Bugger! And the price on adaptor’s in ICE-stores is a laugh in Denmark... A Pioneer ISO-connector costs aprox. 55 euros - so i think i’ll try Ebay instead... :)

Today i got all the wirering done - a piece of cake with this guide... And a lot easier than my old 106 GTI...

Thanks a lot for the link!

Hi Matt or anyone who could help me:) I would be eternally gratefull. This is my first posting. I have recently bought a Jap imports Vitz 1999 4WD and decided ot change the radio as it was useless even when chipped. I managed to find one on ebay however the new one is made up of two seperate units, dispay and radio cassette. Mine was CD/Radio/Cassette all in one. THe new one has the wiring lead missing. I cannot connect the display part with the radio unit. Does anyone know the pin connection so I create a lead or any info wher can I buy one?

I would like to thank you Matt for your detailed pictures as I was able to dismatle my dash and radio without trouble or damage. thanks again.

Hey all,

Quick question, does the tape player still work with this method? What about the 'Tape/Cd' and 'AM/FM' buttons on the top panel, will they still work?

Thanks in advance.

The tape player wont work mate, the buttons wont work either as it has nothing to control

I have a phase 2 Yaris with the teardrop headlights. I want to install a new car stereo as I currently have the standard cassette tape one. I'm looking to do this myself as I can get a cheap stereo from work for about £40-£50. Looking to get either the Kenwood KDC-W311A or Fli Swat 5. Would these fit ok into the cash tray? Would I still need to buy a fascia even though the stereo is fitting into the existing slot? Is this easy to do as I or none of my family have ever fitted a car stereo and I don't wanna risk doing any damage to my car. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yeah. they are single din units so wil fit in with no problem in the cash tray.. you wont need to fit a fascia :)

I would say its very easy!

Moffmo, unreal mate that this advice is still valuable in 2008!

Took under an hour to dismantle and reassemble dash and build in a Sony GT41OU xplod cd player in coinbox using Toyota Yaris wiring adapter.
Sony screw seatings fit Yaris brackets. No tray or fascia needed, no filing either.

A tip. Before disassembling cover the floor opening under the dash to catch any dropped screws and use a magnetic screwdriver. Screws can drop through the hole in the right hand corner of the ashtray housing or from behind the lower dash assembly. :yahoo:

Depends on how much you use your car stereo, without having the engine running...

In my Yaris i have a Phoenix Gold ZX475ti amp that can pump 523 watts RMS @ 14,36 volt (4 ohms) through the system, and i don't have any problems at all with my battery... :)

The most important are the cables - i have a 35 mm cable from my battery to my amp, and a DLS 100 amp automatic fuse... If the powercable is to small, the amp would not be as efficient - and that sucks... :)

Hi,

I've tried to fit an aftermarket head unit today to my Yaris and everything went fine except the wiring connections - when using the Halfords Adaptor I'm left with another pink and blue one which I assume is the speakers - does anyone know where this goes as the Halfords adaptor only has space for two?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Apart from that everything fits great and the guide was superb.

I have images if needed. How do I post them?

Hi,

I've fitted an aftermarket head unit today to my Yaris and everything went fine thanks to this "old" workshop submission.

Great help and glad that it still is on TOC...

This weekend the front doors will get new speakers, also thanks to the information on TOC.

i was wondering one question if your yaris is already fitted with factory cd player ,can you swap this with an aftermarket head unit and would this affect the built in sat nav with voice as i would not want to stop the sat nav thanks for any replies

Hi all!

Im a new member, purchased an 02 plate Yaris for the missus, 1 ltr, I have done all what has been done in these really helpful posts but still have problems! The head unit im tryin to put in is a Sony xplod, I bought the connector for £17.99 from halfrauds! lol! the connector i have has a space for the light blue connector and also a little white one for another connector in the yaris which leaves a larger white one redundant. Is this correct?? When i tested it, there was no sound from the speakers from any radio channel and when I tried to change it to cd, it would start beeping saying reset and then either go back to radio, again with no sound, or turn itself off!! I have reset the cd player according to the manual but still does the same thing! I just would like to kno whether iv connected it right. Blue connector n little white one, bigger white one left out...? cheers all!
